A Fall Activity
Somehow, suddenly, our trees have come alive with color. A week ago, they were still green, or maybe a muted brown at best. My wife remarked that perhaps you need such a humdrum year to make you appreciate those times when the leaves truly are ablaze. But now the hills show a patchwork of startling oranges, yellows and reds, and autumn’s glory has returned.
Now is a good time to collect leaves and press them, as a remembrance of the season. As a girl, my wife used a flower press similar to ours by Glueckskaefer: It is still used by her mother. We will occasionally open an old family book and find there a leaf or flower left to mark a page, bringing back memories of the old maple that stood near a former home, or a bloom that was gathered on a favorite walk. It is a simple and easy way to capture the season and preserve it for years to come.
