“Perkins, Raschka Win 2006 Newbery, Caldecott Medals.” American Library Association.

The 2006 recipients of the Newbery and Caldecott medals were announced today at the American Library Association’s Midwinter meeting.

Lynne Rae Perkins was awarded the John Newbery medal for Criss Cross, and Chris Raschka the Caldecott for his illustrations for The Hello, Goodbye Window, written by Norman Juster.

The Newbery award is awarded to the author of the year’s most distinguished contribution to American literature for children; the Caldecott, to the artist of the year’s most distinguished American picture book for children. I count many past winners among my most favorite children’s books, and recommend readers to the ALA site, where these titles may be found listed.
