“Retired” Toys

This is the season of toy fairs, when the workshops and manufacturers reveal their new designs for the coming year. It also can be, unfortunately, the time when we discover that old favorites have been “retired”, or put out of production. In some happy cases the designs might simply be reworked: 2005 saw new Ostheimer elephants and goats, for example, which are even lovelier than their predecessors. But a company can only produce so much, and inevitably some toys will be discontinued forever.

To this point, we have put together a collection of Ostheimer’s “classics”, which will no longer be sold once the current stock is exhausted. These include the wonderful Dwarf, Witch, and Robber houses, as well as the eerie Devil and the charming Adam and Eve set (which I was given for Christmas).

I am eager to see what Ostheimer will produce this year, and hope that a few of these favorites will reappear in some new form: I think the houses especially make a wonderful backdrop to a collection and would hate to see them disappear altogether.
